Automated Meter Readings
Meters in our service territory are equipped with an
automated reading device known as a “Turtle.” When
installed, a “Turtle” counts the revolutions of the meter
disc. This information is then transmitted over the
distribution line to the substation, where it is sent
over a regular phone line to the cooperative office.
Once the reading is received at the office, the readings
are downloaded directly to the billing system. The
Turtle System can also help identify faulty equipment,
which aids repair and maintenance planning. We can also
provide information to our members about daily energy
usage.
The Turtle System is technology developed in Minnesota.
Hunt Technologies
http://www.turtletech.com, a electronic design
firm headquartered in Pequot Lakes, created the
ultra-narrow bandwidth technology that sends data
slowly-hence the name “Turtle”- yet reliably and
accurately over long distances via power lines.
