Every month I get charged the $39.00 Access charge/Service Availability Fee.  Why?

The “fixed” or basic charge (Access Charge/Service Availability Fee) is a flat fee designed to recover the cost of delivering electric energy to all members.  The fixed charge is designed to have a safe and reliable distribution system which requires a large investment in poles, wires, transformers and other equipment.  It also supports our fleet vehicles, facilities and customer service functions, such as line maintenance, right-of-way clearing and general administration responsibilities.

Kwh Charge-

The energy charge is a charge that is designed to capture the amount of energy or kilowatt hours used by each individual member.

What is the PCA-Power Cost Adjustment that I see on my bill occasionally for?

It is the cost difference between the power cost that was budgeted to actual cost. What impacts this costs? Demand for electricity, and how much additional electricity was needed over what was budgeted for. What can cause the additional electricity demand?
  • Hot and cool weather, seasonal lighting, cooling and heating loads can make a big difference in how much electricity is used.
  • That Great River Energy has to go out on the market to purchase additional power. (This market is very volatile from day to day and hour to hour).
  • Coal, Fuel, and Transportation costs.
  • Power Plant shutdowns or breakdowns.
Is there anything I can do to help alleviate or lower this cost? Conserve in any way you can.
