KPC International Division Description
Kandiyohi Power Cooperative (KPC) has been worked with a Sister Cooperative in the Philippines for the past 11 years. In November of 1994 the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) officially recognized the relationship between KPC and Iloilo 1 Electric Cooperative (ILECO-I), in Tigbauan, Iloilo, Philippines. Over the past 11 years KPC has been involved with conducting hot line training in the Philippines as well is hosting linemen from our sister Cooperative here in Minnesota. We have shipped numerous containers of material to the Philippines from Minnesota. Some of this material has been donated by KPC and other Minnesota cooperatives and some of the material has been purchased by ILECO-I through our trade partnership. The cost for the training and the donated materials has been paid for through the trade partnership and our international division has been operated as a breakeven project.
NRECA has recognized our interest in working with their International Programs Division. As a result they approached us in the fall of 2004 to see if we were interested in working with a struggling municipal utility located in Guatemala. We responded that we were definitely interested in checking out this opportunity. After a trip to Zacapa, Guatemala in June of 2005 we told NREC that we were very interested in pursuing this second international relationship.
We are now in the process of working with NRECA to establish the details of this relationship and an action plan for future direction and activities. We look forward to the opportunities that this new relationship presents to us to help the people of Guatemala experience the many benefits of electricity that we take for granted everyday.
